| PLANNING HIGHLIGHTS Española Valley Fiber Arts Center – A U.S. Economic Development Administration ProjectIn XXXX, the US Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration announced the award of $250,000 in federal funds to the Española Valley Fiber Arts Center as part of a package to purchase and renovate EVFAC’s home on Oñate Street in the heart of Española. NCNMEDD assisted in the development of that EDA proposal. The non-profit had been in that location for ten years, and the grant enabled EVFAC to own the building and invest in its upkeep. EDA support also lent strength to the development of the fiber arts cluster in Northern New Mexico. According to the EVFAC application, “The emerging fiber arts economic cluster capitalizes on, integrates, and supports a variety of regional assets including sheep and alpaca production, yarn production and distribution, equipment production, and fiber artisan promoters such as galleries, e-commerce, and marketing events—all of which generate both income for locally owned small businesses and tax receipts for the region. “ From Ganados Del Valle to Tapetes de Lana to long time Chimayo weavers, weaving has been a mainstay of the region for decades. EVFAC supports the region’s artisans as a supplier of raw materials, a home for classes and business assistance and a retail outlet. 15% of the center’s clients, however, come from outside the region, often for classes and workshops. This brings additional dollars into the local economy and helps to expand and energize this important economic cluster. For more information about EVFAC products and services, contact 505-747-3577 or stop in at 325 Paseo de Oñate, Española.
