| PLANNING HIGHLIGHTS Pecos Village Fire Station – A U.S. Economic Development Administration ProjectOn August 16, 2002, the Village of Pecos convened in its new fire station to celebrate the beautiful construction and the Village’s 50th anniversary as a municipality. Mayor Tony Roybal hosted members of the community, including the first Village Clerk, and present and former volunteer fire fighters. Fire danger is part of the Village history. One reason given for the original incorporation was the ability of a municipality to get more money from the Fire Fund. Mariachis played music, officials made speeches, fire fighters got awards. There was a box of kittens, free to a good home. The Village’s old Dodge (1940’s) fire truck had a place of honor, as did its brand new brush truck. Crews from nearby volunteer units gathered in their gear to give the traditional wet down that baptizes a new facility. The 3,500 square foot facility came through its shower in fine shape, and those present sat down to hot dogs and frito pies. The Economic Development Administration helped the Village realize its dream after the Viveash Fire showed that facilities were needed to protect the local economy from fire danger. Former Mayor Eddie Roy Duran, Village Clerk Lesah Sedillo and others worked hard to get federal, state, and local funds to complete construction. Many congratulations to all involved. NCNMEDD wrote the EDA grant that provided the majority of funding for the fire station and assisted the community in securing state appropriations to continue additional construction.
